Associate at the Italian Space Agency within the Earth Observation Office. After graduating in Physics, she conducted research in physical oceanography and satellite oceanography at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR).
She served as Director of the CNR Institute of Marine Sciences, the largest Italian institute dedicated to marine research. For ten years, she chaired the Italian Oceanographic Commission, representing Italy at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, to which she was also elected to the Executive Council.
She made significant contributions to the development of European operational oceanography and to the design and implementation of the Copernicus Marine Service.
She has been and continues to be a member of steering and scientific committees of numerous international organizations. She is currently a member of the European Space Agency’s Advisory Committee for Earth Observation, the Management Board of Mercator Ocean International, and the G7 working group “Future of the Ocean and the Sea.”
Co-author of more than 180 scientific publications, in 2021 she was included in the Reuters Hot List of the world’s leading climate scientists.
