Mauro Biagi is an Associate Professor of Telecommunications Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome.

His research focuses on underwater acoustic and optical communications, with particular interest in hybrid systems, localization, and physical-layer security in marine environments.

He is involved in PNRR projects dedicated to integrated acoustic–optical networks, acoustic beacon–based navigation, and camera-based optical communications.

Beyond the underwater domain, he conducts research in smart building technologies, developing optical–IR communication and sensing techniques for presence detection and energy-efficient management.

He is the author of numerous papers in IEEE journals and conferences, serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE journals, and actively contributes to national and international initiatives on communication technologies for extreme environments.
